Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Film review: Underworld: Awakening (2012), directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein

Real vampires! Real werewolves! And I have only seen this (fourth) one and the third movie in the series, so I don’t fully understand what the hell is going on, because I don’t fully remember the previous film.

Anyhoo.

Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is captured along with vampire/lycan hybrid David (Theo James) when the humans realise that those two species exist and wage full-on war on them. It’s genocide.

Selene wakes up in a lab some years later, as she’s been cryogenically frozen for a number of years, and she sets off trying to find David. Instead she finds a girl, Eve (India Eisley), who appears to be special, somehow.

Meanwhile, Stephen Rea is an evil doctor, Michael Ealy is a detective, and Charles Dance, Sandrine Holt and Kris Holden-Ried are vampires, or something like that.

The film is mainly comprised of Kate Beckinsale posing in a skin-tight black suit, special effects, and … no actually, that’s about all there is to it, unless you count people getting slaughtered. If you like this particular combination in films, Underworld (any of them) should be right up your alley. If you don’t mind vampires but find the constant posing tedious and the special effects not that special when they’re always there, then go watch something else. Not like this is the only film that has vampires in it. Or werewolves.

Nah, not my kind of film, really, if you hadn’t guessed that already. The big reveal of who Eve is comes as such a shocker (not really), and the rest probably catches more of your interest if you’ve seen the whole series. As I haven’t, but rather been dropped in the deep end, I say “yeah, whatever, pass the popcorn”.

  1. This was a downer… I expected more from it, I feel as if I had wasted my precious time, I expected it to be as good as the previous films. Perhaps they have stretched the plot far too long now and should have ended it at 3.

By the way, Lovely blog! Your opinion is very much valued by me and sounds fair and diverse! I found your blog by a comment under the name of Traxy on a Jane Eyre Review, I loved your comment so much that I decided to follow you here. 🙂

I did agree with you though, if Mr Rochester can be called abnormal so can Jane and he never did propose to Blanche Ingram, he knew she didn’t like him and he didn’t hold any affections for her soul either. His plan was only to push Jane Eyre forward, she wouldn’t have made a move otherwise I believe. She wasn’t experienced in such relations and with men at all. 🙂 Mr Rochester did her good and with her jealousy she realised she truly wanted to be with him and could no longer lecture herself inwardly to keep away.

I like how at the end they would need each other to heal, that’s how I see it. I didn’t think it would work out with John and her.

Sorry for the long comment, hope to read more reviews from you! 🙂

    Cheers.

    1. I thought it was meant to be a trilogy, and then part 4 came out. :]

Thanks for your kind comments, Anne-Marie! Glad you stopped by. 🙂 Really agree with what you say about Jane and Rochester (and Blanche). In a way, yes, both Jane and Rochester were “broken” and together, they could heal. St John would have turned Jane into stone as well, I think. Interesting subject!

  2. hi Traxy – i’ve seen the series and normally liked it. i think that you’ve really banged the nail into the ‘awakening’

Ann-marie – time wasted for real.

    1. From what little I can remember of the third film, that had some kind of plot that was kind of interesting. This one was just … DRAMATIC POSE! CGI! Blood! CGI! Fight! CGI! DRAMATIC POSE! It’s a FILM, not a photo shoot for a fashion magazine. 🙁
