WHAT: The New Statesman
WHERE: Theatre Royal, Nottingham

Funnily enough, about a year ago, when walking around in Bromley, we found a theatre who were showing The New Statesman. It was sold out. And a week or two ago, we found out it was showing in Nottingham! Soooo … we went last night. 🙂

It was hilarious!

Rik Mayall! On stage! w00t! “Deliciously sinister” I think I read somewhere. Very true. This is the first time either of us has seen him live, but we could tell he’s a seasoned pro, turning fluffed-up lines into improvisation that is incredibly funny. Sometimes, they all kind of lost the plot and were laughing.

Now, two options: Read the BBC Nottingham review for instance, or why not pay the play’s official website a visit? There’s a video blog that’s quite interesting. Also, you can see where it’s playing and what it’s about, because I have to go and make some dinner, so can’t be bothered. 😛

Okay, let’s edit this and elaborate a little, to make myself clear. The bit about never seeing Rik Mayall on stage might not seem like a big deal to some people. To me, it is. Not as huge as it would be to meet Sam Neill, okay, but still, a pretty big deal. (Have also seen a stand-up gig with Ardal O’Hanlon, front row seats, but I think I might be in denial about that. 😉 ) Massive Mayall fan right here. We’re both very fond of him.

And there he was, live on stage! The Rik Mayall, comedy legend! Yes, I know, it’s normally quite anal humour (especially in Bottom, go fig), it has to be said, but crazy enough for me to go “yay!” about it. And with Bottom, getting into hysterical laughing fits. And it was a very funny show with lots of big laughs. Money well spent! And now, when watching The Young Ones or anything else, one can say “seen him live!” And that’s pretty cool, I think.
