TV series episode review: Spooks (2010), series 9, episode 2, directed by Michael Caton-Jones
This episode didn’t grab me as much as the first one did. The storyline wasn’t as interesting, so it was more interesting to see the characters and what they did. This is an episode mentioned in one of the interviews, where you see the events from several characters’ viewpoints.
Lucas (Richard Armitage) and Beth (Sophia Myles) are at a hotel, with Beth posing as an oil representative going to a British oil tycoon’s meeting. She gets in an elevator with a bunch of other invitees – and it stops, power goes out, doors open and everyone gets shot. Everyone except Beth and someone else. Someone was out to murder the oil tycoon, but did he know about it and tried to pre-empt the attack? And what do the Nigerians have to do with it?
Anyway, those are the basics.
People get suspicious about Beth, and Lucas becomes head of Section D, which I got the impression he only accepted in order to get A level clearance in order to look up Vaughn Edwards (Iain Glen), as he tried and was locked out for not having that security clearance. Plus he wanted to keep Beth, because she knows he has secrets. The only “progress” in the John bit is that we get a glimpse into the briefcase (passport, photos, poker chips, general stuff – looks a bit like my box of memories, i.e. old stuff from going different places, like a Paris Métro ticket and that sort of thing) and he decides to get in touch with Maya (Laila Rouass), a woman in one of the photos. She calls him John too, and something happened when he was in Africa that meant he couldn’t return because it would put her at risk, so instead, she thought he was dead. Surprise! No shagging on the kitchen table in this episode, though. Maybe next.
So yes, more interesting when it comes to characters rather than for the plot. I mean, I still don’t have a clear picture of who Dimitri (Max Brown) is. Give the guy some more screen time and a personality so we can get to know the guy already! We know Beth quite well by now, or at least we’re getting a hang of her. And I’ve decided I kinda like her, even if I’m not sure I trust her either. She did save Harry’s bacon, there must be some good in her, right? Sophia Myles looks absolutely fabulous and she has lovely blue eyes too. Like Lucas! And speaking of which, Lucas is being quite shifty as of late. Anyway, we’ll see what next episode brings, shall we?
