Russell Howard: Big Rooms & Belly Laughs (2009)

WHAT: Russell Howard: Big Rooms & Belly Laughs
WHERE: Trent FM Arena, Nottingham
WHEN: 15 December 2009

So, basically, it’s been about ten months since we saw this show, and a lot of it has now faded into memory, but considering Russell Howard has not been on Mock the Week for a bit now due to filming Russell Howard’s Good News, I’m having slight withdrawal.

The first time we saw him live was actually earlier the same year, when the Dingledodies tour got extended. That was 11 June 2009, at the Royal Concert Hall, but as he has grown in popularity he now needs a bigger venue – the Ice Arena. And also, he’s coming back in February, but we’ve not decided if we’re going yet or not. Tickets are still available, so we have a little more time to make our minds up. Not that we need convincing; Russell Howard is a hoot!

The only thing that really stands out in memory ten months later, aside from “oh ‘e was absolutely hilarious, ‘e was” is that he said he has a bizarre fascination for the stationary section of the supermarket. Or any shop. He likened it with entering into a sort of notepad Narnia. The rest of the audience didn’t seem impressed, but I sympathise wholeheartedly. It would be awesome to go shopping with him at Staples. We could get lost in there for hours, cracking Narnia jokes as we went along. (Would need to remember to pack the Turkish Delight – they don’t sell that at Staples.) Ahh, I knew there was a reason to like him! That, and the fact that he’s a Harry Potter fan, as we’ve discovered on Mock the Week previously. Don’t think he really went into anything Potter in the show, though. He should have done, that would have been awesome too. Okay, so we could go to Staples and talk about Harry Potter AND crack Narnia jokes. Yeah, that works.

Ohh, there was something about a t-shirt as well, I seem to recall. He swapped a t-shirt with a bloke in the audience, much to the audience’s delight. Or at least the female portion of it. I just joined in the general mirth around it, not any “OMG lookit his chesticles!!” girly squeals. One does have a sense of dignity to retain when one is in public.

Russell Howard’s style of comedy is not rude and crude, but it’s still biting. But in a nice way. He’s not nasty, he just has a good laugh and looks at the world in weird and wonderful ways, some of which I happen to share. The world is a remarkable place on occasion.

… Maybe we will get some tickets after all, actually.
